Description

DVD, ~1 hour inc. 30–45 min. discussion

REN chooses a friend to act as a competent protector for this session. Ren put his father at a safe distance and freeze-frames him at the end of the room. Now more relaxed, he accesses his defensive fight response by telling his father, in an intense outburst of “NO!” – he imagines the ally stepping in and setting boundaries. Now he is able to discharge high arousal at a pace that feels comfortable. We acknowledge the father was also affectionate at times and it is OK to feel, to include, the love. REN feels he can protect himself as an adult and resolves his dissociative pattern. “Now I have arrived in my body” REN says, “I can stand up for myself and there is no danger now” Social engagement is restored. His previously frightened 5-year-old is integrated into his present, safer life.

Teaching points:
1. Install safe allies to bring in a new felt sense of protection.
2. Distance and freeze the perpetrator which reverses REN’s immobilization and diminishes his need for dissociation.
3. As arousal is discharged, move constriction into expansivenessas defensive responses are restored, evoked and completed.
4. Integrate recurring state of terror of the Child Self from earlier Ego states (arousal-induced “encapsulated states”) into the present Adult Self.
5. Extinguish the threat response and projection of the past trauma to restore a sense of safety.
